You're probably like me. You're in the process of confirming a whole bunch of friend requests of people from your past. Because of this you can actually watch as Facebook spreads to the masses.
And whenever you hear Zuckerberg (he was on the Today Show this morning) talk about Facebook, you get the impression that it's providing this perfect service making the world a better place.
Puh-lease!
I believe that the success of Facebook is more about voyeurism and social obligation. What does so-and-so look like after so many years? Are they successful? I hope not. I got a new friend request from someone I knew in primary 5(12th grade right?), I MUST CONFIRM!
After Facebook completely saturates the market, and the initial novelty wears off (and it definitely does), what will become of the site then? Is Facebook doomed in spite of ridiculous short-term growth?
I think so. Do you?
To me, the superficiality and the loss in productivity by far outweigh the rest.
Another thing: Are the Webkinz kids going to graduate to Facebook when they get older? I have a tough time believing they will.
Well I think I'm gonna fence sit on this. Personally, I think using facebook a lot is a ridiculous waste of time, but the event organizing and the ability to track (some) people is really useful and well implemented. A friend of mine I had lost contact with some years ago managed to track me down through facebook after specifically signing up to do that.
ReplyDeleteI only really ever go on if I get an email notification of someone adding me or something... which doesn't happen that often really.
What really bugs me is when people start insisting on using facebook to get in touch - like people who pretty much refuse to use any other method of communication then MSN messenger. I only signed up for facebook to organize a party that I wanted to invite some work friends too, but they pretty much insisted I use facebook to get in touch with them. Oh! and people who you had a falling out with or dont like (anymore) for some reason, who will refuse to talk to you in real life or on the phone or maybe even respond to emails, but will still keep you as a friend on whatever social networking site and even sometimes comment on stuff. But these problems can happen with instant messaging and other types of communication, just seems that social networking sites have the problem really bad.
Sooo True! Well written.
ReplyDeleteI will have to disagree with you on this one.. Facebook is awesome, You get to share pictures with friends and reconnect with people from the past
ReplyDeleteI dont like social networking. Its a complete waste of time...Get a life facebook users!!
ReplyDeleteI dont believe in social networking. i agree to some extent that its indeed a complete waste of time. I see people spend hours on facebook looking at pictures of friends and family. Facebook is more of a "show off your looks" site than interaction..
ReplyDeleteI dont see anything wrong in using facebook. The only problem i have is seeing people get addicted to facebook. I beleive in cOomunicating with friends but facebook as turn off to be "a show off site"...."look at me now!!!!"....I have a limited number of friends and i have disciplined myself..check facebook once a week
ReplyDeletefacebook is nice because it helps connect you with old friends but i think it is over hyped.
ReplyDeleteHave a Facebook account but really don't use it much. Like social media for business mostly and I'm more of a blog and Twitter fan.
