It is quite evident that we are living in one terribly noisy world and it seems to be getting worse every day. Everywhere we go we are accosted by loud, unwanted sound. When we enter elevators, malls and restaurants we are engulfed by muzak. I recently had lunch at apple bees restaurant with a friend and found the background music so loud that it interfered with normal conversation and the enjoyment of my lunch. When I asked the waitress if she could turn the music off, or at least down, she said, "I don't think we can." Surely we as a people are still in charge of volume controls.
* Go for a walk in nature. Let the silence soothe your spirit.
* When you are alone in your residence turn off all noise making appliances. Begin with fifteen minutes of silence and gradually increase the duration.
* Learn how to meditate and schedule a ten minute meditation period once or twice a day. Gradually extend your meditation time.
* When driving to work turn off your car radio and drive in silence
I still struggle with the fifth one because I find it very weird and strange driving without any sound. I don't know anyone that drives without listening to music, news or talking on the cell phone. Hopefully I get to enjoy and cherish periods of silence which I am hoping with help reduce my stress midst our ***** noisy world..........
When you add lawnmowers, leaf blowers, jack hammers, jet engines, transport trucks, and horns and buzzers of all types and descriptions, you have a wall of constant noise and irritation. Even when watching a television program at a reasonable volume level you are blown out of your chair when a commercial comes on at the decibel level of a jet.
We seem to have created a cultural acceptance of our noisy world in spite of the fact that it is making us ill physically and psychologically. We can't seem to live without background sound. We have friends who turn on the television the moment they awaken in the morning and leave it on all day. The house is just too quiet if it isn't on. Most of my friends tell me that the first thing they do on arriving home after work it to turn on their television or music player as loudly as would be tolerated by sane humans around.
While we have very little control over noise in the environment at large, we do have control over our own private environment. So i decided to do a little research on ways to cultivate a friendship with silence since I was about to go nuts. I came across an article online about developing friendship with silence and these are some of the few ways the article suggested
* Make a conscious commitment to the experience and appreciation of silence.* Go for a walk in nature.

I like this post. I'm going to think about it. Living in NYC background noise is hard to get away from - but I might be able to add some more quiet moments to my day.
ReplyDeleteYou are soo right. It amazes me when people use ear piece and you can still clearly hear whatever they are listening to. I love my music but i also love my silence too. I'm gona consciously try the 15min thing tho
ReplyDeleteI love silence, :D
ReplyDeleteAmen! I hate noise. It sends my brain into shock and pisses off my ears.
ReplyDeleteGood post. I drive in silence at times. I never used to, but as you say, there is so much noise, it's overwhelming. I sometimes take walks with my grandson, who has earbuds in his ears and listens to music. I prefer hearing the leaves crackle under my feet, or a frog croak or the birds sing. Those are fantastic sounds I'd miss otherwise.
ReplyDeleteGreat point. We all need to unplug from the noise. I don't have TV on in my apartment and I won't listen to music on an ipod when I'm walking or doing something else. I used to listen to music while running, but now it's not even appealing (unless I'm on a long run, like over an hour) because I'd rather tune into the sights and sounds around me. It's very liberating. We have so much to hear when we listen to the "silence." Really it's not silent at all.
ReplyDeleteThis is nice blog. I got many things from this post which can be useful for us. It’s really enjoyable post. You should continue make this type of post.
ReplyDeleteToo much noise is considered as a pollution as well. As a human being we need to have time to be silent and to recollect. Some people nowadays no longer appreciate the other beautiful sound like the bird singing and other insects sound. It makes me feel so relax. But of course i need to understand that not all people are nature lover. I'm living alone and sometimes my radio is on for 2days so, i'm guilty of this noise but there are times that I just wanted a complete silence. Anyway, You nailed the point. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks,

ReplyDeleteThere is definitely an increase in the noise and as I have grown older I appreciate those still peaceful moments. Every now and then when I drive silence and my thoughts are the only thing I need and is a great way to reflect on those simple things in life. Blessings for the weekend.

Blame it on technology. As technology evolves, the noise increases. This is the reason some folks would rather stay in a county than in a big city. However,i'm sure this noise issue would be addressed by thesame technology in time to come.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more...
